Volunteering has its rewards and benefits in Nassau County

When you join the Glenwood Fire Company, you are part of the same volunteer fire service tradition described by the Nassau County Fire Commission recruitment program. The county describes what volunteers can expect this way:

Become a Nassau County firefighter or emergency medical service volunteer and join the ranks of the proud neighbors that have become heroes in their community.

Becoming a member of the Nassau County fire service is a time-honored tradition that has kept the residents of Nassau County safe for over 100 years; and therefore whether you volunteer to fight fires or provide emergency medical services, you will be making a commitment to carry on this vital public service. Since volunteering requires you to devote time to learning and maintaining skills, Nassau County offers some unique benefits and rewards to recruit and retain its volunteer firefighters and emergency medical service members.

While the greatest benefit of becoming a volunteer firefighter or emergency medical service member will be the pride of knowing you are a hero in your neighborhood for your service to others, there are many benefits including new friendships, becoming involved in your community and most of all keeping your community safe from the perils of fire or render aid in a medical emergency.

Programs and incentives often include

  • Property tax exemptions
  • State income tax credits
  • College tuition at Nassau Community College through the S.A.F.E.R. Grant.
  • Retirement benefits and service pensions
  • Annual medical exams
  • Free equipment
  • Free training
  • Scholarships via the S.A.F.E.R. Tuition Assistance Program.
  • Workers' compensation benefits for active volunteer members
  • College credit for training courses (please see the FAQ for more details).
